Purpose of the Position:

The Senior Manager will join a team of entrepreneurial and tightly-knit event professionals who bring SCMP’s award-winning journalism to life. Through a robust calendar of in-person, virtual and hybrid events, the successful candidate will play a critical role in the SCMP Events team in producing quality events to achieve sustainable profitability and business growth. He or she will be mainly responsible for:

  • Event programme research and development, identifying relevant and timely topics to be developed into full-fledged programme based on market needs and monetization potential
  • Identify, connect with and recruit industry leaders and newsmakers as speakers and moderators for conferences and events
  • Create a world-class speaker experience, from the point of invitation to confirmation, speaker preparation and on-the-day support, be it through virtual, in-person or hybrid events.


In this role, you will: 

  • Understand the project scope of assigned events; research and develop full agenda/programming, often working closely with SCMP editorial team
  • Identify and recruit potential speakers for conferences
  • Work with the team in identifying potential sponsors and commercial opportunities
  • Research and generate future conference topics/ideas based on industry trends
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for each conference
  • Maintain key communication with speakers before, during and after events
  • Work with cross-functional teams to manage multiple tasks within deadline


Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • Strong research skills and programme development capabilities to create quality events. 
  • 6-8 years of working experience in the conferences business, particularly in the B2B space. Candidates with a journalism background will be viewed favourably
  • Hands-on experience in managing speaker invitations and speaker engagement
  • Consistently tuned in with the news of the day and industry trends
  • Ability to be the domain expert within the Events team to help shape other parts of events, such as marketing and operations
  • Proven experience in the conferences/events industry in a programme/producer role; this is a must-have experience
  • Able to excel in a fast-paced, hands-on working environment; moving quickly from ideation to execution. 
  • Possess excellent leadership skills along with problem-solving abilities; be able to prioritise decision-making and allocate workload/tasks accordingly
  • A team player with the ability to adapt approaches across a diverse base of stakeholders. Our team is small, but effective; each team member brings to the table specific skills and experiences to complement one and another, and we believe one plus one is always more than two
  • Strong English communication skills, both in verbal communication and copywriting. We work with many different people inside and outside of the Events team, and it is imperative that you enjoy engaging with others; so be prepared for cross-functional collaboration
  • Proficient in Google Workspace and comfortable thriving in a hybrid office environment. 


Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
