About the Team:
The Technology desk at the South China Morning Post is dedicated to covering China’s technology trends, businesses, and their global impact. You will join a dynamic team of reporters and editors across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. This role operates with a startup vibe, producing forward-looking, insightful content for our most-valued subscribers.
Purpose of the Position:
We are seeking a specialist who combines aggressive reporting instincts with deep research capabilities. The successful candidate will track China’s advances in Artificial Intelligence, cutting through the noise to deliver fresh insights to a global readership. You will not only write incisive news stories but also compile factual data and visualizations that serve as the basis for value-added content for our premium readers.
In this role, you will:
- Investigative Reporting: Commit to telling the story of China’s AI ambitions, its major players, and regulatory shifts; drive deep enterprise projects while remaining nimble enough for breaking news.
- Deep Sector Research: Research the AI sector, including tracking laws, regulations, and financial data; help build information-collection tools to increase team productivity.
- Information Synthesis: Glean facts from SCMP’s archives, third-party data, and newsroom colleagues to produce accurate stories on how AI benefits economic development.
- Network Building: Conduct exclusive interviews with C-suite executives, technology analysts, and policy experts to maintain a consistent flow of news and deep context.
- Collaboration: Work closely with bureau managers and other desks within the newsroom to provide context on the news of the day.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or above; a major in Journalism, Communications, or an AI-related field is a plus.
- Experience: At least 3 years of reporting experience in a major newsroom, with 1-2 years of experience in reporting AI, or 4+ years in a role requiring advanced research and data collection skills.
- Subject Expertise: Familiarity with China’s AI sector, global tech trends, and the regulatory agencies overseeing the Chinese economy.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to evaluate complex data sets, read financial statements or stock filings, and explain trends in a simple, easy-to-digest way.
- Languages: Native proficiency in written Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) and fluency in Mandarin is required.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong Office skills; advanced spreadsheet users or those with practical coding skills (for data scraping/analysis) will have a significant advantage.
- Mindset: A strong team player who can work under stress, meet day-to-day deadlines, and adapt quickly to a changing tech landscape.
Work location will be at Hong Kong office.
