About the Team: 

The South China Morning Post seeks a talented Front-end Developer to join its award-winning graphics team.
 

Purpose of the Position:

Join the SCMP Infographic Team and contribute to creating detailed explainers and engaging visual stories. Leveraging a range of resources including infographics, illustrations, and data visualizations, you will be part of the team responsible for researching and executing all visual journalism content across SCMP’s digital, print, and social media platforms.

In this role, you will: 

  • Understand the essentials of information design, infographics, and visual storytelling
  • You have strong creative coding skills.
  • You have programming skills for server-side development and back-end functionality.
  • Work independently in all stages, and join collaborative teams with designers, reporters, engineers, developers, and editors.
  • Optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability
  • Investigate and implement new web-related technologies related to user interface design.
  • Optimize UI/UX by testing designs for practicality
  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Maintain the structure and design of the projects based on team and user feedback
  • Create tutorials and documentation to help the team edit widgets and products
  • Keep our repositories, portals, and infographics tools working efficiently
  • Conduct regular research on emerging technologies related to Infographics and Data visualization
  • Create mockups of widgets and projects to share with stakeholders
  • Build interactive web applications that allow readers to search and explore data sets.
  • Meet deadlines in the most optimal way
  • Solve technical problems and bugs with programming and coding
  • Manage Geographic and mapping resources, design and 3d software are a plus.


Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in multimedia/electronic art, interaction design, communication design,  Computer science, or other related qualifications
  • Min 2+ years of experience in web development
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient project management and organizational skills
  • Advanced level of written and spoken English
  • Creative, energetic, and independent with excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in:
  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3.js, Processing, jQuery, GSAP, Svelte, Figma
  • Cross-browsers development, Content Management Systems
  • RESTful Services/APIs
  • Responsive/Mobile Design
  • Solid skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects is a plus)
  • Experience with information design, data visualization, and visual storytelling
  • Experienced with and strong interest in creative coding
  • Experienced with processing and visualizing massive and multivariable data from various APIs
