About the team:

South China Morning Post (SCMP) is looking for a Deputy Editor to support the production of content for a weekly lifestyle magazine focused on culture, F&B, travel and more. 


Purpose of the position:

As the Deputy Editor, you will oversee accuracy and improvement of copy through editing, rewriting and fact checking. You will add value to copy through additional media and SEO analytics. You will support the editor on projects and cross-functional collaboration.

 

In this role, you will: 

Production Editing

  • Plan, write and commission stories for print and online.
  • Manage copy improvements through editing and rewriting.
  • Add value to copy through additional media and eye-catching visual elements.
  • Ensure that the title is a leader in the coverage of lifestyle and cultural trends
  • Ensure editorial deadlines are strictly adhered to across the board (including writing, editing, translating, subbing, design and production) and that content quality is upheld.
  • Manage assignment scheduling, maintaining a steady flow of pages to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate closely with writers, graphic designers and other members of staff.

Analytics

  • Use analytical tools to make sure the right stories are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Craft top-notch SEO and print headlines, standfirsts and captions. Manage search engine optimisation to ensure high indexing across key terms.
  • Lead team projects and liaise with section editors, photographers and production.
 

Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • Degree holder with 5 years of relevant working experience in a reputable media company; experience in lifestyle journalism and print are a must
  • Thorough knowledge of editorial operations, the publishing business and the various tasks performed by the editorial team. 
  • Broad knowledge of cultural trends and issues, including fashion, food and wine, arts, social movements and the media
  • Extensive networks in cultural communities.
  • Excellent grasp of cultural trends in Hong Kong, Asia and internationally.
  • Strategic and forward thinking mindset with proven leadership capability and a strong sense of integrity.
  • Ability to analyse situations quickly, make decisions when needed, lead content professionals, deal effectively with the public, function well as part of a team and delegate effectively.
  • Good command of written and spoken English. Fluency in Chinese and Cantonese is desirable but not required.
 

Work location will be at Causeway Bay office
