About the Team:

The SCMP Business desk covers a wide range of business themes across Asia, focusing on Mainland China and Hong Kong: banking and finance, markets, industries, real estate. The team has reporters in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and London. 


Purpose of the Position:

We are looking for a top-notch, versatile senior writer to deliver a range of finance news topics covering the ECM and DCM markets from Hong Kong, China and the region surrounding the world’s second-largest economy for a global readership.   Must blend deep financial acumen (markets, accounting, analysis) with strong journalism skills (clear writing, interviewing, storytelling for diverse audiences), significant experience (5-10 years)The position is based in Hong Kong.

Be prepared and be willing to travel wherever the story takes you. Have a keen nose for news, ability to crunch numbers and analyze data, the temperament to interview and extract comments from non-English speakers, and the skills to weave reporting into coherent narratives.


In this role, you will: 

  • Lead the Coverage: Deliver industry-defining reporting on Hong Kong’s property sector for a global audience. This includes breaking news on major transactions involving prominent investors, listed companies, and high-profile celebrities. You will monitor new launches and secondary market trends, translating daily movements into actionable insights for readers.
     
  • Drive Investigative Reporting: Move beyond the headlines to uncover the forces shaping the market. You will anticipate trends—such as the mounting property debt crisis, developer liquidity, and shifting investment strategies—ahead of the competition, elevating the reader’s understanding of where the sector is headed next.
     
  • Spot Trends with Precision: Deconstruct the implications of daily news to reveal broader market shifts, connecting the dots between isolated events and systemic change., deliver analytical features through government data 
     
  • Build and Leverage Networks: Maintain a deep, trusted rolodex of sources spanning developers, C-suite executives, analysts, legal experts, and property agents to ensure first-access intelligence.
     
  • Deliver Across Platforms: Weave data, documents, and on-the-ground reporting into powerful narratives, tailored for both a fast-paced digital audience and the daily newspaper.


Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • Language & Communication: Native or professional proficiency in Cantonese and Mandarin is essential to conduct high-level interviews and accurately interpret Chinese-language legal and financial documents.
     
  • Sector Expertise: Minimum five years of reporting experience, with a proven track record of securing exclusives within the property,  or business sectors.
     
  • Financial Acumen: Strong ability to parse financial statements, stock exchange filings, debt covenants, and land registry records to uncover stories hidden in the numbers.
     
  • Writing Excellence: Top-tier English writing skills, capable of transforming complex data and financial jargon into sharp, accessible, and engaging prose under tight deadlines.
     
  • Market Intelligence: Deep understanding of Hong Kong and Mainland China’s economic landscape, particularly the regulatory frameworks and policies governing the real estate industry.
     
  • Agility & Teamwork: A self-starting, collaborative journalist who thrives in a fast-paced, digital-first newsroom while upholding the rigor and accuracy required for print.
