Assistant Manager, Content & AI Innovation
About the Team:
The Content & AI Innovation team is to empower the newsroom by integrating product design, media expertise and resources, and AI tools into daily workflows, ensuring that SCMP remains at the forefront of technological advancement while maintaining the high standards of our in-depth editorial experience.
Purpose of the Position:
The Assistant Manager (Content & AI Innovation) is a hybrid role dedicated to empowering the newsroom through artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven growth strategies. You will bridge the gap between editorial needs and technical execution — designing, building, and deploying AI "agents", automation workflows, and even non-AI skillsets to boost productivity and efficiency aligned with professional and quality journalism.
In this role, you will:
- AI & Automation Development: Design and maintain proprietary automation tools and efficiency boosters to empower journalists to relieve from repetitive workflow or procedural work (include but not limited to data collection, data cleaning, interactive research, etc.)
- Implementation Support: Collaborate with Editorial, Product, Technology, User Growth and other teams to execute strategies aimed at increasing productivity and AI literacy for newsroom professionals and relevant colleagues; Ultimately consolidate verified tools or resources into centralized portals.
- Robust Feedback Loop: Assist in conducting Interviews with colleagues to identify bottlenecks and build AI solutions for the pain points, and find best use cases from skillful AI users; monitor adoption of our AI tools or resources by newsroom individuals and collect regular feedback from colleagues to ensure AI initiatives translate into measurable growth.
- Infrastructure Management: Assist in managing integrations of major AI resources and tools (e.g. APIs), cloud services, and Git tools, etc.
- Innovative Exploration: Maintain open exploration on any AI tools or even AI-free efficiency boosters, to find space for each colleague to use non-AI tools, prompts, chatbots, agents, skills, and SOPs to help journalists use technologies effectively in their daily routines.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- AI/LLM Knowledge: Hands-on experience with OpenAI, Gemini, and Claude API use cases; experience in prompt engineering and building AI agents; GitHub actions, Java Script, and basic cloud deployment (AliCloud or similar) is preferred.
- Vibe coding: Proficiency in Python, HTML and other codes (specifically for data collection, cleaning, automation, and API integration) is a preference; and passion and track record in Vibe coding and AI practical use is highly appreciated.
- Analytics: Ability to work with data hubs and interpret app performance metrics (DAU, YoY growth, GMP).
- Editorial Sensibility: Understanding of newsroom workflows and the ability to translate "editor requests" into technical requirements.
- Collaborative Mindset: Experience working in cross-functional teams (Editorial, Tech, and Marketing).
- Agility: Ability to pivot our knowledge and intelligence to adopt down-to-ground solutions to simplify projects, balancing feasible investments and efficient outcomes.
- This role will report to the Associate Director of Content & AI Innovation department. The ideal candidate should be comfortable with both technical explorations and regular communication focusing on practical, deployable tools rather than just theoretical research.
Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
